The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to block the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report argued that a funding lapse limits the authority of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
