Astronaut Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.
