A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
