The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
