Toy Story 5 Teaser Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
Exactly 30 years since the original Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and bringing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys
The preview reveals the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the toys appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a carnival and assisting prize toys find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the badge pinned to her shirt.
It is hoped she is still the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
